⚠️ Please Keep Watch for the Asian Hornet in Ireland ⚠️
The Yellow-Legged Asian Hornet (Vespa velutina) is one of the biggest emerging threats to bees and pollinators across Europe. While Ireland does not currently have an established population, the risk of accidental introduction is real.
These hornets prey heavily on:
🐝 Honey bees
🦋 Pollinators
🌼 Native insects
A single nest can consume thousands of insects and place huge stress on local bee colonies.
As we move into the warmer months, everyone can help by staying alert — especially:
gardeners
walkers
farmers
fishermen
campers
outdoor workers
ferry and transport staff
What to look for:
Dark/black body
Yellow legs (“yellow socks”)
Orange band on the abdomen
Larger than a wasp
Often seen hovering outside beehives hunting bees
⚠️ Please do not approach or disturb a suspected nest.
If you think you have spotted one:
📸 Take a photo if safe to do so
📍 Note the location
📢 Report it immediately to the National Biodiversity Data Centre or local authorities -

Early detection is critical. Countries that responded quickly had a far better chance of slowing spread.
Ireland still has an opportunity to protect its bees and biodiversity — but vigilance matters.
